Wheeling Central Catholic captures Class A The Champions Cup titles for boys and girls in 2025-26

The WVSSAC has announced the Class A winners of The Health Plan Champions Cup, recognizing the top-performing high schools for excellence in both athletics and academics. Wheeling Central Catholic swept both the boys and girls competitions.

The Health Plan Champions Cup honors the leading boys’ and girls’ athletic programs in each of the WVSSAC’s four classifications. Standings are based on performances across a variety of sports, with points awarded for success in state championship events. Teams are also awarded points based on the previous year’s graduation rate.

Class A Girls

On the girls side, Wheeling Central Catholic captured three state titles on its way to 886 points. The Maroon Knights were champions in soccer, track, and softball during the year. Wheeling Central also had third-place finishes in cheerleading and swimming and made appearances in the state semifinals in both basketball and volleyball to go along with a sixth-place finish in cross country.

Charleston Catholic finished runner-up with 775.5 points on the strength of a runner-up finish in tennis and third-place finishes in track and cross country.

St. Marys was third with 496.5 points. The Blue Devils won state titles in cross country and basketball.

Gilmer County was fourth (393 points), followed by Ritchie County (386) and Pendleton County (385).

Class A Boys

Wheeling Central finished the year with 976 points take home the title. The Maroon Knights were state champions in basketball and football, and were runner-up in wrestling and soccer. Wheeling Central also took fourth in golf, fifth in swimming, sixth in tennis, and eighth in track.

Charleston Catholic took second in the competition with 593 points. The Irish had state titles in golf, cross country, and tennis on the year.

East Hardy was third with 577 points, followed by St. Marys (487), St. Joseph’s Central (485), Ritching County (483), and Tucker County (481).
