WVSSAC announces The Health Plan Champions Cup standings after winter championships

The WVSSAC has announced the midyear standings for The Health Plan Champions Cup, recognizing the top-performing high schools across the state for combined athletic and academic excellence.

The Health Plan Champions Cup honors the leading boys’ and girls’ athletic programs in each of the WVSSAC’s four classifications. Standings are based on performances across a variety of sports, with points awarded for success in state championship events. Teams are also awarded points based on the previous year’s graduation rate.

Morgantown leads the Class AAAA girls standings with 586.5 points, followed by University with 483 points and Washington with 473.5 points. The Mohigans had runner-up finishes in both volleyball and basketball to help land atop the standings.

Wheeling Park leads the Class AAAA boys standings with 664 points, followed by University with 587 points and Hurricane with 489.5 points. The Patriots registered points in six of the seven sports counted.

Shady Spring leads the Class AAA girls standings with 469 points, followed by Bridgeport with 394 points and Herbert Hoover with 388 points. The Tigers best finish came this fall with a run to the semifinals in volleyball.

Fairmont Senior has a narrow lead in the Class AAA boys standings with 482 points, followed by Ripley with 473.5 points and Bridgeport with 400 points. The Polar Bears registered top finishes in football, wrestling, swimming and basketball to surge to the top.

Charleston Catholic leads the Class AA girls standings with 591.5 points, followed by St. Marys with 489 points and Doddridge County with 390 points. The Irish claimed state titles in both soccer and basketball to tally top points.

In Class AA for the boys, Williamstown leads the way with 585.5 points, followed by Charleston Catholic with 494.5 points and Wheeling Central Catholic with 485 points. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the semifinals in football and also were runner-up in basketball.

Pendleton County leads the Class A girls standings with 386 points, followed by Cameron with 291.5 points and Greenbrier West with 290.5 points. The Wildcats have the top spot on the strength of a run to the semifinals in volleyball and a quarterfinals appearance in basketball.

On the boys side for Class A, Tucker County sits atop the standings with 390.5 points, followed by Cameron with 299 points and Trinity with 289.5 points. The Mountain Lions advanced to the semifinals in football and finished runner-up in basketball.

The final champions will be named at the conclusion of the spring championships.
