Updated: The Health Plan Champions Cup standings (5/21)

The WVSSAC has announced the updated standings for The Health Plan Champions Cup, recognizing the top-performing high schools across the state for combined athletic and academic excellence, following last week’s tennis championships.

The Health Plan Champions Cup honors the leading boys’ and girls’ athletic programs in each of the WVSSAC’s four classifications. Standings are based on performances across a variety of sports, with points awarded for success in state championship events. Teams are also awarded points based on the previous year’s graduation rate.

Morgantown continues to lead the leads the Class AAAA girls standings with 685.5 points. The Mohigans are coming off a runner-up finish at the tennis championship. Washington (568) and George Washington (485.5) both registered points in tennis and rank second and third in the standings, respectively.

Wheeling Park leads the Class AAAA boys standings with 758.5 points. The Patriots registered 94.5 points for qualifying for the state tennis championships. Hurricane is next with 589.5 points, followed by University with 587 points.

Herbert Hoover surged into the lead in Class AAA girls with 482.5 points after qualifying for the tennis championship. Shady Spring moves to second place (469) and Bridgeport is third with 394.

Ripley moved into the top spot in Class AAA boys with 568 points. Fairmont Senior and Herbert Hoover are now tied for second following the tennis championships.

Charleston Catholic remains atop the standings in Class AA girls with 689 points. The Irish were semifinalists at the state tennis championships. Williamstown, on the heels of the title in tennis, moved just ahead of St. Marys by a 489.5-489.0 margin.

In Class AA for the boys, Williamstown remains atop the standings with 684.5 points. The Yellow Jackets were runner-up to Charleston Catholic at the tennis championship. The Irish are in second in The Health Plan Champions Cup standings with 594.5 points, followed by Wheeling Central Catholic (485).

Pendleton County retained its lead in Class A girls with 386 points. Cameron is currently in second (291.5) and Greenbrier West is third (291.5)

On the boys side for Class A, Tucker County sits atop the standings with 390.5 points, followed by Cameron with 299 points and Trinity with 289.5 points.

The final champions will be named at the conclusion of the spring championships.
