Herbert Hoover girls, Ripley boys win Class AAA Champions Cup for 2024-25
The WVSSAC has announced the Class AAA winners of The Health Plan Champions Cup, recognizing the top-performing high schools for excellence in both athletics and academics. Herbert Hoover High School earned the girls’ title, while Ripley High School claimed the boys’ championship.
The Health Plan Champions Cup honors the leading boys’ and girls’ athletic programs in each of the WVSSAC’s four classifications. Standings are based on performances across a variety of sports, with points awarded for success in state championship events. Teams are also awarded points based on the previous year’s graduation rate.
Class AAA Girls
Herbert Hoover finished with 678.5 points after recording points in several sports, including runner-up finishes in volleyball, swimming, and track and field. The Huskies also placed sixth in cross country, reached the state semifinals in softball, and advanced to the state quarterfinals in tennis.
“We are extremely proud of our young women,” said HHS Principal Michael Kelley. “They demonstrate daily what we expect of Hoover students. The character they display in the hallways, the classroom, at practice, and on the field of play is symbolic of what makes Hoover a special place.”
Elkins placed second with 582 points. The Tigers won a state championship in swimming, finished third in cross country, fourth in track, and reached the state semifinals in soccer and the quarterfinals in volleyball.
Weir claimed third place with 573.5 points behind a third-place finish in softball. The Red Riders were sixth in track and made quarterfinal appearances in both tennis and volleyball.
Bridgeport earned 489 points with a state championship in volleyball, while East Fairmont followed closely with 484.5 points, highlighted by a runner-up finish in soccer and a third-place finish in track and field. Grafton rounded out the top six with 477.5 points. (View complete standings.)
Class AAA Boys
Ripley’s balanced performances helped the Vikings secure the boys’ title with 668 points. The Vikings won a state championship in baseball, finished third in golf, fifth in wrestling, reached the quarterfinals in both basketball and tennis, and advanced to the regional finals in soccer.
“Ripley High is honored to accept the The Health Plan Champions Cup for Boys AAA,” said Ripley High Principal Jeffrey Banton. “Our teams performed very well, but more importantly, they excel in the areas of academics, sportsmanship, and character. We also wish to thank the parents and families for being an outstanding support system for these student athletes.”
Fairmont Senior finished as runner-up with 579.5 points. The Polar Bears were state semifinalists in football, basketball, and baseball, placed fourth in wrestling, and took sixth in swimming.
Frankfort earned third place with 497 points behind a football state championship and runner-up finishes in cross country, track, and baseball.
Bridgeport finished fourth with 494.4 points. The Indians captured state titles in football, basketball, and swimming, and reached the regional finals in baseball.
Point Pleasant was fifth with 487 points, highlighted by state championships in both wrestling and track and a semifinal appearance in soccer. Elkins followed closely with 484.5 points, earning state championships in swimming and cross country. Herbert Hoover added 482 points to round out the top group. (View complete standings.)
