Cabell Midland, Shady Spring, St. Marys take home golf titles

Cabell Midland (AAA), Shady Spring (AA), and St. Marys (A) took home the team titles at the 2024 WVSSAC Golf Championships after two rounds of play on the Jones Course at Oglebay Resort.

Class AAA
The Knights secured their first Class AAA team championship since 2016, posting a combined score of +31 (457). The Knights, who finished as runner-up in both 2021 and 2022, outpaced second-place Hurricane, who finished with a score of +51 (477). University was third at +69 (495), while Washington was just one stroke back in fourth at +70 (496). George Washington rounded out the top five with a score of +72 (498).

Jack Michael from Cabell Midland took medalist honors for Class AAA, finishing with a two-day total of +6 (148). Michael shot a 75 on the final day, which was tied for the lowest score of the day. He was leading after round one and maintained his advantage, finishing 6 strokes ahead of his closest competitor. The top eight individuals, who earned All-State honors, are listed below:

Class AA
Shady Spring After finishing as the runner-up last year, Shady Spring went wire-to-wire to take home the Class AA title this year with a total score of +59 (485). Wheeling Central followed in second at +76 (502), while Chapmanville and Ripley tied for third at +107 (533). Lewis County and Williamstown were also in close contention for fifth, with scores of +134 (560) and +135 (561), respectively.

The individual champion for Class AA was Luke Tiu from Wheeling Central, finishing with a score of +12 (154). After shooting 75 in the first round, Tiu shot a 79 on the final day and withstood a charge from Shady Spring’s Tyler Beard who carded a 77 on the day to take runner-up. The top eight All-State individuals are:

Class A
St. Marys returned to the winner’s circle for the first time since winning three-straight titles from 2019-21 after finishing with a total score of +71 (497). The Devils improved on their first-round total of 253 with a 244 on the second day. Charleston Catholic finished second at +88 (514), while Gilmer County took third at +103 (529). Fourth-place Petersburg finished at +109 (535).

Jordan Teets of East Hardy was the Class A medalist after posting a total of +14 (156). Teets shot a 74 on the final day, the lowest score of the day, to overcome a two-shot deficit after 18 holes. He claimed a two-stroke win over Trent Renner of St. Marys. The top eight All-State individuals are:
