2017-18 State Tournament Recap

The 2017 WVSSAC State Golf Tournament concluded on Wednesday, Oct 4 at the Speidel Golf Club, Wheeling, WV.

Washington (AAA), Wyoming East (AA) and Ravenswood (A) all won golf state championships on Wednesday at Oglebay Resort.

Washington in Class AAA finished 22 shots ahead of last year’s state champion Cabell Midland. Wyoming East, meanwhile, won its second straight Class AA championship, finishing 11 shots better than runner-up Fairmont Senior. Ravenswood’s Class A title dethroned Charleston Catholic, which had won six straight championships. The Red Devils beat runner-up Madonna by 17 strokes.Washington’s Christian Boyd (AAA), Bridgeport’s Mason Williams (AA) and Madonna’s Howie Peterson (A) were the individual medalists.

ONA, W.Va. — The Cross Country State Championship Meet was held over the weekend from Cabell Midland High School.

Ripley’s Tori Starcher won the Class AAA girls 5k individual championship with a time of 17:35.  “I’m so happy about it,” she said. “I didn’t know how the race was going to play out, but it played into my favor and I’m happy with how it went. I like to be a front-runner, so I just tried to hold a lead and when I could make my move, I was going to go. Words can’t describe it.”

Chris Barbera of Woodrow Wilson won the Class AAA boys individual 5k championship with a time of 15:39. The Class AA-A girls individual championship was won by Jessica Melvin of Philip Barbour with a time of 18:57, while the AA-A boys individual champion was won by  Winfield’s Aaron Withrow at 16:09.  Withrow said. “I looked back coming down the hill and didn’t see anyone (behind me) – I knew then that I was going to do it. I just kept thinking about all of the 14-16 mile runs that I did this summer. It feels great, especially after losing and getting second last year.

2017 State Soccer Tournament, Beckley wv

Cabell Midland (17-4-4) knocked off University 1-0 in Girls’ AAA

Hurricane (19-1-4)  defeated Wheeling Park 2-0 in Boys’  AAA

Nitro (23-1-1) Captured the A-AA boys’ title with a 2-1 win over RCB

RCB (17-4-4) scored with 6:23 to play and then a got the game winner early in OT  for a 3-2 win over Charleston Catholic.

    

 

    


2017 State Volleyball Tournament

Class AAA Musselman won their 6th State Volleyball Title in the last nine years

Class AA Philip Barbour won their 3rd consecutive Class AA Title

Class A Wirt County won their 11th State Volleyball Title since 2000

  

   


WVSSAC Super Six Football Championships 

WHEELING, W.Va.

Bluefield won its 11th football state championship on Friday night, erasing a five-point halftime deficit for a thrilling 29-26 victory over Fairmont Senior

Martinsburg’s dominant run atop Class AAA continued on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs beat Spring Valley 44-16 for another football state championship. It was the 28th straight win for Martinsburg (14-0) and sixth title in eight seasons.

After a six-year gap, Wheeling Central is back on top in Class A as the Maroon Knights dethroned St. Marys 40-21 on Saturday night for the school’s 10th football championship.
