Smokeless Tobacco Cessation Training

Your help is needed to market "The CHEWFREE Program, A Practical Team Approach to Tobacco Cessation." Please invite a teacher, coach, school nurse, counselor or other Department of Education individuals to attend the conference at the Embassy Suites Hotel/Conference Center, Charleston. WV.

The Saturday, April 7, workshop will review the prevalence and health risks involved in using snuff and chewing tobacco (smokeless tobacco) and review effective interventions that can be used to prevent use and programs that have been developed to assist adolescent users in quitting.

Research based prevention strategies for classroom and schools that involve school nurses, peer leaders, and cross age teaching in their delivery will be reviewed. Messages that parents can use to discourage use of smokeless tobacco will be included. The presenters will focus on interventions that have proven effective in helping teens quit their use of snuff and chew. The program will review interventions for athletes and how dentists and hygienists, in collaboration with athletic trainers, coaches, and peer leaders can increase the effectiveness of the intervention. Additionally an interactive computer based cessation program for helping adolescents quit using smokeless tobacco will be demonstrated.

There are funds available to support Department of Education employees with registration and hotel expenses. A block of suites will be held until March 20. All requests received after this date will be handled on a space and rate available basis. For reservations, call 304-347-8700. When making reservations, indicate that you are attending the ChewFree program presented by the Tobacco Prevention Program.

Register for the Conference by phone: Phone 304-293-5912 and Mary will take your registration over the phone.

Coalition members are welcome to register for the conference. Teachers, coaches, and etc., receive priority in being reimbursed for registration and hotel expenses. When you phone to register, we should have a good idea of the funds remaining.

For your information, the workshop on Friday the 6th is for dentists and dental hygienists. Phone your dentist and dental hygienist and encourage them to attend the conference so that will be better prepared to help you reach your community.

Thanks for your assistance in promoting the Conference.
