Information from Interscholastic 1999 Season Regulations
1. The course for all races will be 5,000 meters. The only exception would be due to
limitation of the course.
2. A team shall consist of at least five but no more than seven runners. For a team to
count in any meet, at least five members must finish the event.
3. During the regular season, it is optional for a team with four (4) runners to factor
in the score of the last place runner for the team to count that event.
4. A school must have competed in no fewer than five regularly scheduled
interscholastic meets in order to enter the Regional and State meets.
5. All Cross Country meets must be scored according to National Federation Rule 9,
Section 2, Articles 1-6, Pg. 6 1, of the 1999 Track and Field and Cross Country Rules
Book.
6. Uniforms: Coaches are responsible for their participants complying to these
rules.
Each competitor's uniform shall consist of
a. Shoes.
b. Full-length jersey and shorts issued by the school.
1. Shorts may vary in length and style, but must be the same color
for all team members.
2. The jersey (singlet) and shorts may have school identification
and the jersey may have the competitor's name.
3. The jersey shall not be knotted or have a knot-like protrusion.
4. Logo/trademark shall not exceed 2 1/4 square inches nor exceed
2 1/4 inches in any dimension.
5. The American flag, not exceeding 2 x 3 inches, is permitted.
6. Any visible shirt worn under the jersey and other visible
apparel worn under the shorts must be unadorned and of a single (same, solid) color, but
need not be the same color under each item of apparel. Rationale: To more clearly define
and communicate the purpose of the rule. Changing "visible apparel" to
"shirts" allows the meet official! to be more consistent in applying the rules
and preserves the intent of not allowing such shirts to cause confusion in identifying
teams.
7. Loose-fitting, boxer-type shorts are permitted for boys and
girls and closed-leg briefs are acceptable for girls.
8. Bicycle shorts, thigh huggers, abbreviated thigh huggers,
leotards, body suits, abbreviated briefs (French or high cut) and similar apparel may be
worn under the shorts, but not in lieu of shorts.
c. The waistband of a competitor's shorts shall be worn above the hips.
d. A shoe is a covering for the foot. Shoes shall be worn on both feet and
shall have an upper and definitely recognize able sole and heel. The upper must be
designed so that it can be fastened securely to the foot. The sole and heel may contain
groves, ridges or track spikes which are no longer that I inch. The use of ballet type
slippers, gymnastic! slippers or sweat socks does not meet the requirements of the rule.
e. Each team member shall wear the same color and design school uniform (jersey
or trunks). When other visible apparel is worn under the track uniform, it must be of a
single (same, solid) color; but each undergarment worn by the competitor does not
necessarily have to be the same color. If worn by more than one team member (two or more),
that apparel must be the same color, but not necessarily the same length.
f. A competitor shall wear the assigned contestant number, when numbers are
used.
g. Participants are forbidden from wearing sunglasses, caps, and jewelry. Hair
pins made of soft material or rubber bands may be worn in the hair.
h. Participants may not have an object such as a straw, pencil, or other
objects in or about the mouth. i. Gloves may be worn during the season. j. Runners may
wear a wristwatch only (no stopwatch).
Penalty: For illegal uniform, the competitor is disqualified from the event.
7.Since cross country is not included in the limited team membership rule, students
participating in any running event as an individual while a member of his/her school team
may accept a medal, trophy, cup, certificate, ribbon, plaque, unattached letter,
unattached chevron or any similar award.
