Regarding Coaching Certification
The WVSSAC offers two courses through ASEP (American Sport
Education Program) and National Federation Coaches Education Program - Coaching Principles
and Sports First Aid. Cost $125.00
1. Does an individual have to take both courses to receive the
authorized certified status?
YES. Twelve hours of course work must be completed.
2. Does an individual who is not a professional educator have to
take the NFICEP courses before they begin coaching?
YES. All course work, testing, and state certification must
be completed prior to assuming any coaching responsibilities.
3. If an individual is First Aid certified, does he/she have to
take the Sports First Aid Course?
YES. The WVSSAC does not waive either course regardless of
prior course work, experience, certification, etc.
4. If an individual took the class but failed to complete the
testing requirement, will he/she have to retake the course to receive a new testing
materials?
If the course work was completed prior to January 1, 1997,
the course will have to be retaken at the cost of $125.00. (The course text and
instruction were revised as of January 1997.) If the course was taken after January 1,
1997, the individual must pay a cost of $40.00 per test per test plus administrative
costs.
5. If an individual takes the NFICEP courses and receives an ASEP
certificate after completing the test requirement, how often must he/she retake the NFICEP
courses?
Course retakes are not necessary; however, the WV State
Department of Education authorization to coach is only issued on a yearly basis and must
be renewed each year.
